This is especially so in the southeastern region as there were many native Mexicans in that area of the U.S. when that region of the country was annexed through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. Music plays a large and important aspect in Mexican influence on U.S. culture. The main focus of this post is this Primary Source recording done in 1939 by Jos\u00e9 Suarez<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The song is called \u201cVenimos de Matamoros\u201d which translates to \u201cWe Come from Matamoros\u201d &#8211; a town off of the Rio Grande. It falls into the category of Mexican folk songs called \u201ccorridos\u201d which translates to \u201cracing\u201d, possibly in reference to the fact that these songs are usually more upbeat in tempo. In addition to its traditional tempo, this \u201ccorrido\u201d also maintains traditional instrumentation of a single guitar as well as a solo repetitive melody line.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2024\/10\/Corrido-Picture.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8606 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2024\/10\/Corrido-Picture-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCorrido&#8217;s\u201d originated in 16th century Spain with traveling musicians or \u201ctrovadores\u201d in a d\u00e9cima<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> format consisting of ten lines<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>. In the Mexican tradition, \u201ccorridos\u201d were added to by women in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution which took place from 1910-1917.\u00a0 The tradition was then carried into Texas in 1915 when it is believed the story of the song takes place. In a nearby town to \u201cMatamoros\u201d called \u201cBrownsville\u201d where Texas rangers killed the family(wife, son, and brother) of a man named Aniceto Piza\u00f1a. This event caused Piza\u00f1a to seek revenge and join the group of Mexican Americans against the White Americans taking land and causing conflict in Texas at the time. In comparison to the original 16th century \u201ccorridos\u201d, the 19th century version served as a narrative to tell stories of heroism and strength as well as maintain a Mexican Identity in the midst of expansionism. In \u201ccorridos\u201d regarding the United States and expansionism, the songs often tell stories of those who were killed(by usually white Americans) in honor of the sacrifice they made.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Much like other marginalized groups of America, Mexican Americans used music to find identity and peace in the forceful \u201cothering\u201d that was being cultivated at the time. The bigotry and discrimination that was faced became an aspect of Mexican American identity, separating this new identity from that of being \u201cMexican\u201d and from being \u201cAmerican\u201d. Both of these countries began through colonization, thus furthering the struggles portrayed in \u201ccorridos\u201d.\u00a0 Today \u201ccorridos\u201d are considered a subgenre of American folk songs, even though it went through many cultures and countries starting with Spain, going to Mexico, then to the independent Republic of Texas, and finally to the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"sdfootnote1\">\n<p class=\"sdfootnote\"><a class=\"sdfootnotesym\" href=\"#sdfootnote1anc\" name=\"sdfootnote1sym\">1 <\/a>&#8220;Venimos De Matamoros&#8217; [3:13].&#8221; <i>The American Mosaic: The Latino American Experience<\/i>\u00a0audio. 2024.
