She is also quite the civil rights activist, she even had the opportunity to sing for Martin Luther King Jr. Mavis began singing with her family at age 10 all the way throughout her education. In the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chicago Daily Defender<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Staples is regarded as \u201canother voice that ranks with Aretha\u2019s.\u201d <\/span> <a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since debuting her first solo album in 1969 \u2018Mavis Staples,\u2019 she has since then recorded 14 albums under the genre: rhythm and blues along with gospel. It can be argued that &#8216;You Are Not Alone&#8217; is one of Staples&#8217; most popular songs. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c\u2018You Are Not Alone\u2019 is a track to someone who has lost a loved one. It\u2019s a song to someone who has lost a relationship or a friend. It\u2019s a song to someone experiencing hardship \u2013 to someone deep in depression or dismay. It\u2019s a reminder that <\/span><b>you are not alone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span> <a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mavis Staples and the Staples Singers served an important role during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960\u2019s. The music they produced during this time were filled with powerful messages about equality. In other words, Mavis Staples\u2019 music consistently reflects her standpoint on social justice matters, we should regard her as true activist of her time.
