However, she was not the first, nor the only ethnologist learning about and extracting the sonic resources of Great Plains tribes at that time. Consider Alice C. Fletcher, who \u201cbegan collecting ethnological and <a href=\"https:\/\/mattmarble.net\/track\/1070095\/song-of-love-1897-recording-of-omaha-tribe-by-alice-fletcher\">musical data<\/a> in 1883 among the Omaha and Dakota Indians.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>As both Densmore and Fletcher&#8217;s work perpetuated cultural imperialism, understanding how it contributed to the development of ethnomusicology at the expense of native cultures perhaps leads to a better understanding of the discipline&#8217;s tainted, yet prolific, roots.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>An 1893 news clipping from the scrapbook of Ely Samuel Parker describes Alice C. Fletcher as\u00a0 \u201cA Woman Who Worthily Stands for Her Sex,\u201d referring to her work as President of the Anthropological Society.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>\u00a0 Having studied \u201cIndians in our Western Territories,\u201d the writer declares that \u201cthere is no one in this or any other country whose knowledge on the subject approaches hers.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a> For her research, Fletcher \u201c&#8230;spent years among the Indians, living in their camps unprotected, learning their language, studying their customs, music\u2026\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> The writer states that at the time of this publication, she was in the midst of \u201crevising\u2026an important work on the music of the Omaha Indians\u2026\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a> Two decades later into her career, she published a 600+ page work on the history of the Omaha Tribe that I tracked down in the library.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a> Like Frances Densmore in numerous works like <em>Chippewa Customs<\/em>, she notates indigenous songs using western notation (reinforcing its colonial hierarchy), and uses a social scientific lens to try and explain their culture. Yet in the 1893 clipping, the writer assures us that her \u201cwork among the Indians has a benevolent as well as scientific side\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7350\" style=\"width: 258px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7350\" class=\"wp-image-7350\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-13-at-9.23.49-PM-166x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"439\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ely Samuel Parker scrapbooks: Vol 11, 1828-1894, The Newberry Library, 34.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The article goes on to describe her friendship developed with the tribe, and how she leverages this to \u201csecure for the Peabody museum trophies and relics from the different tribes which had never ever been seen by a white man.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a> Ultimately, this transactional relationship unfortunately outlines how researchers of her era thought it ok to exploit the trust of tribes.
