This week, we&#8217;re diving deep into Cohen&#8217;s early years, his family, and the beginnings of his musical career. Who knows what we&#8217;ll find out about our guy!<\/p>\n<p>Based on census records, a draft registration card, and various indexes, we know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestrylibrary.com\/imageviewer\/collections\/6482\/images\/005257121_02408?usePUB=true&amp;_phsrc=iu51283132&amp;_phstart=successSource&amp;usePUBJs=true&amp;pId=18700236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecil Cohen was born<\/a> on April 27, 1894 in Chicago, Illinois, and lived there for the first 10 years of his life with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestrylibrary.com\/imageviewer\/collections\/7602\/images\/4113703_00176?usePUB=true&amp;usePUBJs=true&amp;pId=10160229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his parents John and Flora<\/a>. He writes,&#8221;[Cohen] has a good technic but the warmth of his artistic temperament was distracted by nervousness&#8221;; I would be nervous too, if I was playing for a large portion of my community at a major center of social and artistic life.<\/p>\n<p>It might be worthy to note that each composer represented on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/clip\/70812153\/the-recital-by-miss-maude-j-roberts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the recital program<\/a> was white and, besides Amy Beach, a European man. At a time when blackface minstrelsy was still embarrassingly popular, black classical musicians were still performing music by white composers.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> It seems as though it wasn&#8217;t until composers like HT Burleigh and Florence Price came along that African-American Art Song started coalescing as a distinct genre of classical art music, paving the way for people like Cecil Cohen to produce their own music that stays within the style, or pushes on the boundaries.<\/p>\n<div id=\"sdfootnote1\">\n<p class=\"sdfootnote\"><a class=\"sdfootnotesym\" href=\"#sdfootnote1anc\" name=\"sdfootnote1sym\">1<\/a> \u201c<span class=\"text-color-purple\">Minstrel Songs<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"text-color-purple\">Library of Congress<\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/collections\/songs-of-america\/articles-and-essays\/musical-styles\/popular-songs-of-the-day\/minstrel-songs\/.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back to another installment of everyone&#8217;s favorite series\u00a0Cohen Quest.
