He found extreme fame within his traditional ragtimes, including \u201cThe Maple Leaf Rag\u201d and \u201cThe Entertainer,\u201d however, was consistently on the poverty line, forced to sell his possessions and manuscripts. Joplin had yet to become the \u201cKing of Ragtime,\u201d a moniker that he would later inherit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This article from The Freeman, an Indianapolis\u00a0 newspaper, references \u201cThe Guest of Honor,\u201d Joplin\u2019s opera. An opera company of 30 toured the opera during the early 1900s, however, nearly all traces of this opera have been lost. In what we could consider the worst streak of archival luck, during the tour, the receipt stubs were stolen, and Joplin was forced to sell his manuscript to pay for the opera\u2019s boarding house fees.
