A notable musicologist specializing in southern hymnody, Pullen\u2019s tone and voice in communicating his \u201ctrue\u201d origins of Black spirituals is heard loud and clear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the telling of all history, however, it is commonly acknowledged that it is told from the perspective of the \u201cwinner\u201d. Thus in good practice, it is important to search for and listen to the perspectives of other stakeholders in said history, who may tell a very different history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Black southerners were Christianized in the mid-1700s, four out of five Black church members eventually flocked to Baptist churches (Jackson, 286). This proportion is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">astounding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and impossible to not feel the need to inquire more about. This of course led me to wanting to know more about the first and oldest Black Baptist church.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5427\" style=\"width: 258px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2021\/10\/service-pnp-habshaer-ga-ga0000-ga0018-photos-055251p_150px.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5427\" class=\"wp-image-5427\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2021\/10\/service-pnp-habshaer-ga-ga0000-ga0018-photos-055251p_150px.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5427\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First African Baptist Church located in Savannah, GA<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The First African Baptist Church was organized in 1773 under the leadership of Rev. George Leile, \u2014 making the church even older than the United States itself! George Leile<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_5429\" style=\"width: 182px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2021\/10\/lovecv.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5429\" class=\" wp-image-5429\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2021\/10\/lovecv-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">History of the First African Baptist Church book cover<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In researching the First Black African Church, I came across a book entitled \u201cHistory of First African Baptist Church\u201d, compiled by Rev. E. K. Love, and contributed to by dozens of Black and African American Georgian Reverends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In one entry to the book, Rev. T. J. Hornsby writes on the relationship between white and Black Baptists. According to Hornsby, the supposition that there was no relation between white and Black Baptists in antebellum days can not be true. Hornsby preaches and writes that because white and Black Baptists believe in and come from the very same Father, they are brothers, regardless of the oppressive behavior and beliefs of white Baptists.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOn account of condition or circumstances one may ignore a brother by actions, and refuse to accord to him a brother&#8217;s recognition, but it does not destroy the relationship.\u201d &#8212; Rev. T. J. Hornsby<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hornsby emphasizes the fact that they sat in the same seats, heard the same sermons, and sang the same songs. However, Hornsby also tells of the willingness of Black Baptists to return to their duties to their \u201cbrothers\u201d when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">given<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the opportunity to pray.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This text is thus distinctive in that even though the connotation of the words \u201cbrother\u201d and \u201cbrethren\u201d is one of equality and mutuality, Hornsby also paints the now well-understood picture of indoctrination through Christianization in a light that deems it understandable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe pastor would preach to them earnestly and faithfully, and at times growing truly eloquent in his discourse, and, among many other good things, he would not forget to exhort them to obey their masters, to be honest and industrious, for this is your reasonable service. And, I tell you, the doctrine to the brother in color was both appropriate and timely.\u201d &#8212; Rev. T.J.
