Usually, a quick Wikipedia blurb will pop up at the top of the page and that\u2019s settled, your question is answered. But what if it wasn\u2019t? Not to the fullest truth anyways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If anyone is curious about the bluegrass genre and looks up the term \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=bluegrass+music&amp;oq=blueg&amp;aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j69i59l2j69i60l4.1285j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bluegrass music<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d on Google, they would find that \u201cthe genre derives its name from the band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys.\u201d A little further down they would find that the originator of bluegrass music is in fact Bill Monroe. Our hypothetical casual researcher would likely be satisfied with their answer and put their phone away after this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They shouldn\u2019t be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bluegrass musician, Rhiannon Giddens explains in her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ibma.org\/rhiannon-giddens-keynote-address-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2017 Keynote Address at the IBMA Business Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that bluegrass is the result of cultural exchange. \u201c[it] is actually a complex creole of music that comes from multiple cultures, African and European and Native\u201d not from \u201ca Scots-Irish tradition with \u2018influences\u2019 from Africa\u201d.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Going back to our hypothetical casual researcher Googling terms on their phone, if they wanted to learn a bit more about bluegrass music, they would find that the fourth search result when you Google \u201cbluegrass music\u201d is a link to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluegrasshall.org\/inductees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame<\/a> website<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. A quick skim through the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">list of inductees<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0would show them that every person ever inducted to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame is white. <a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Similarly, a Rolling Stones Article titled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-new-bluegrass-five-acts-to-watch-88265\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New Bluegrass: Five Acts to Watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d\u00a0names five bands where almost all musicians are white. <a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, where does the media&#8217;s fascination with equating whiteness and bluegrass come from? Latino artists also contribute to and create bluegrass music. Jerry Garcia is widely known as the lead singer of the Grateful Dead, but his work with his bluegrass band, Old and in the Way, is not discussed nearly as much.\u00a0<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When we look at early reports on bluegrass along with the complicated history of American Music, it is not entirely shocking that credit is not given where it\u2019s due.
