They are all mostly published between 1911-1920 and follow similar trends about a child leaving home to the dismay of the Long Suffering Mother. The sheer volume of such similar songs is not a coincidence, this extremely specific genre of sheet music comes from the Tin Pan Alley era of songwriting which Robert W. Randall<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> explains as\u00a0 &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Music publishers and composers alike operated in a world where success, measured by profit, hinged on their ability to understand through emotional cognition the yearnings of their audiences.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.20-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4367 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.20-PM-115x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.20-PM-115x150.png 115w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.20-PM-231x300.png 231w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.20-PM.png 312w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 115px) 100vw, 115px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The marketplace of music for these creators was not purely about creating music for an existing audience, but creating an audience out of music that they could create. The significance of this music appears to be more closely tied with national allegiance and loyalty, and undoubtedly a little bit of guilt. <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.35-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4374 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.35-PM-115x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.35-PM-115x150.png 115w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.35-PM-231x300.png 231w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-16-at-9.59.35-PM.png 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 115px) 100vw, 115px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In &#8220;Never Forget Your Dear Mother and Her Prayer&#8221;<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> the lyrics echo this sentiment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNever forget your mother tho far away you may roam, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Always remember she\u2019s praying, For you to come back home, Temptations round you will gather, Face them with courage and care, Never forget your dear mother and her prayer\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The creation of Mother&#8217;s Day in 1914<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> by Woodrow Wilson is likely closely tied to this era of music, establishing a commercial holiday that has since been tied to lavish displays of wealth and public adoration.
