{"id":3744,"date":"2019-09-16T22:06:23","date_gmt":"2019-09-17T03:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/?p=3744"},"modified":"2019-09-20T21:05:21","modified_gmt":"2019-09-21T02:05:21","slug":"pocahontas-a-history-vanished-into-the-world-of-disney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/2019\/09\/16\/pocahontas-a-history-vanished-into-the-world-of-disney\/","title":{"rendered":"Pocahontas: a History Vanished into the World of Disney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1995, a new Disney princess was introduced: one that did not follow the typical \u201cdamsel in distress.\u201d This princess may have not been a damsel in distress, but she certainly sparked new conversations regarding a people overlooked and often forgotten, considered vanished, even.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>This princess is Pocahontas, and the\u00a0people are Native Americans.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Disney producers\u2019 goal in creating Pocahontas was to \u201caddress the rise in public criticism from various ethnic groups over racial stereotyping in their most recent productions\u201d (<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/search.proquest.com\/docview\/821047423\/fulltextPDF\/D647AD95C54040CDPQ\/1?accountid=351\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>). In order to prevent another cultural appropriation outbreak in Pocahontas, the producers hired Native American advisors to join their team and cast Native American performers to provide the voices for the main Native American roles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-16-at-9.41.51-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3765 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-16-at-9.41.51-PM-300x261.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-16-at-9.41.51-PM-300x261.png 300w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-16-at-9.41.51-PM-150x130.png 150w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-16-at-9.41.51-PM-768x668.png 768w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-16-at-9.41.51-PM-1024x890.png 1024w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-16-at-9.41.51-PM-345x300.png 345w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-16-at-9.41.51-PM.png 1668w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">(Gary Edgerton and Kathy Jackson&#8217;s article, &#8220;Redesigning Pocahontas: Disney, the &#8216;White Man&#8217;s Indian,&#8217; and the Marketing of Dreams.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>However, by creating a story about Pocahontas (while attempting to incorporate love, drama, and music), they risked continuing the stereotype of the \u201cHollywood Indian,\u201d as outlined in Gary Edgerton and Kathy Jackson\u2019s article, \u201cRedesigning Pocahontas: Disney, the \u2018White Man\u2019s Indian,\u2019 and the Marketing of Dreams.\u201d This stereotype is an image focused on representative types and traits that are typically used to depict Native Americans in films, such as dress and spirituality (<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>). Beyond the \u201cHollywood Indian\u201d stereotype, the producers of Pocahontas also allowed the \u201cVanishing Indian\u201d theory to strengthen.<\/p>\n<p>It all began in their marketing campaign, specifically their partnership with McDonald\u2019s. \u00a0A 20 second McDonald\u2019s commercial from 1995 opens with a flute-like instrument playing, accompanied by a rhythmic drum sequence. The camera zooms in on two children, wearing what looks like modern-day Native American Halloween costumes and feathers in their hair, playing with the Pocahontas toys from the McDonald\u2019s Happy Meals. Next, an older man beckons the children into a teepee, where they start watching the Disney movie Pocahontas. The commercial concludes with two individual dressed in what looks like wooden masks and armor playing with the Happy Meal toys. This commercial exudes stereotypes from the \u201cHollywood Indian\u201d stereotype, such as the dress, non-historical teepee, and the men in wood, which seems to inaccurately symbolize spirituality and tradition.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ybOxxshm7YA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">(The 1995 McDonald&#8217;s commercial advertising Pocahontas)<\/p>\n<p>This ties into the liberties that Disney took throughout the movie, such as distinguishing the violent and traumatic experiences that the real Pocahontas endured, such as her kidnapping, isolation from her people for a year, marriage, and eventual death at age 21 from tuberculosis. By leaving them <em>out<\/em>, they strengthen the \u201cVanishing Indian\u201d theory, as discussed in Dan Blim\u2019s paper, \u201cMacDowell\u2019s Vanishing Indians\u201d, with Pocahontas a specific example of an Indian vanished into history, ignoring her true fate and primarily remembered by her Disney-depicted fate (<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0BxQzWOgr8AurSDY2cHlZMEk5UXN6R3NqcThjYXAtalNNS2w4\/view\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, Disney is not entirely to blame for the diminishing of Pocahontas&#8217; true story. \u00a0A May 1907 edition of Ladies&#8217; Home Journal published an article titled &#8220;The Love Story of the First American Girl&#8221;, written by Laura Spencer Portor. This article begins, &#8220;Few of us know the entire story of Pocahontas. Yet it is a delightful story so full of romance that it might fitly begin in the old romantic way, &#8216;Long, long ago,&#8217; or &#8216;Once upon a time&#8217;.&#8221; (<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a>) \u00a0It continues talking about a romance between John Smith and Pocahontas, portraying her history as one like a fairytale. As shown by this article, the idea of the &#8220;Vanishing Indian&#8221; in terms of Pocahontas was a concept that was initiated very early on, much before Disney; people didn&#8217;t want to acknowledge the dark, violent aspects of her life brought on by their ancestors.
