Is music appropriation a bad thing? According to TheFreeDictionary.com the definition of music appropriation is: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">borrowed<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elements<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com\/Aspect+of+music\"><b><i>aspects<\/i><\/b><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com\/Musical+technique\"><b><i>techniques<\/i><\/b><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creation<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com\/Musical+composition\"><b><i>piece<\/i><\/b><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(TheFreeDictionary.com).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, appropriation of music styles in itself is not bad. However, once those music styles are being re-interpreted by people who didn\u2019t originally create that particular genre or song style, we start to find problems. This is called \u201cCultural Appropriation\u201d. According to The Free Dictionary, \u201c<\/span><b><i>Cultural appropriation<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adoption<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elements<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com\/Culture\"><b><i>culture<\/i><\/b><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">members<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">culture.<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com\/Race+impersonation#cite_note-Young-1\"><b><i>[1]<\/i><\/b><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultural appropriation<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perceived<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com\/Race+impersonation#cite_note-2\"><b><i>[2]<\/i><\/b><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controversial,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmful,<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notably<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cultural<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">property<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com\/Minority+group\"><b><i>minority group<\/i><\/b><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used by <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">members<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dominant<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">culture<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consent<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">members<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">originating<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">culture;<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seen<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as misappropriation <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violation<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com\/Intellectual+property\"><b><i>intellectual property<\/i><\/b><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rights\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (TheFreeDictionary.com).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example of cultural appropriation is when someone who is not Mexican throws on a Charro suit as a costume for Halloween.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3293\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mexican Cultural Appropriation<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is completely misrepresenting its origins. Cultural appropriation in music has been an issue in the Western world, especially in the United States. The reason is most, if not, all music that is \u201cAmerican\u201d is originally black music. Most jazz, blues, ragtime, hip-hop, country, spirituals, and other songs we have discussed in class have found their origins in African-American culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, artists such as Bruno Mars and Iggy Azalea are being criticized for creating music in genres that originated from black musicians. Even after Bruno acknowledged his influences at the 2018 Grammy\u2019s for example, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kaIG8PwO9CM?t=28\">[Bruno Mars Acknowledges His Influences in 2018 Grammys]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an article was written about his role as a racially ambiguous artist in today\u2019s music industry. Even Seren Sensei posted a video on Twitter defending her argument that Bruno Mars is using his racial ambiguity to further his credit in creating black music. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hannahmburrell\/status\/971924903174733826?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthegrapevine.theroot.com%2Fajax%2Finset%2Fiframe%3Fid%3Dtwitter-971924903174733826%26autosize%3D1\"><strong>[Seren Sensei]<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this issue is a bit more complex than it seems. To understand why, we must allude back to the cultural music appropriation of black music by white artists in the early 20th century United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=anQzoJQZerk\">[Elsie Janis &#8211; Anti Rag-Time Girl (Audio)]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd: Elsie Bierbower, aka: \u201cElsie Janis\u201d was a singer, songwriter, actress and screenwriter from Columbus, Ohio. <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2018\/03\/large-page-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3286 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2018\/03\/large-page-1-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2018\/03\/large-page-1-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2018\/03\/large-page-1-118x150.jpg 118w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2018\/03\/large-page-1-768x978.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2018\/03\/large-page-1-804x1024.jpg 804w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/americanmusic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2018\/03\/large-page-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/a>She moved to Los Angeles to live her dreams in the entertainment industry, and travelled around the world performing for vaudeville, Broadway and Hollywood. She was very famous in her time. However, as with everything that seems to good to be true, Elsie utilized ragtime, an African-American genre, to write her 1913 song \u201cAnti-Ragtime Girl\u201d. By 1913, Ragtime was in its prime as a popular American genre, similar to how hip-hop is dominant in mainstream culture today. It is clear that she uses ragtime to create this piece. Are her actions considered cultural appropriation? Yes and no. Yes, because she did not invent ragtime music, and it is clear that she is living lavishly for herself based off the income of her music\u2019s success. Some may argue that it is not moral for one to use another&#8217;s culture to re-interpret in another perspective. It is still very complicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That leaves us with today. Eminem, Iggy Azalea, Bruno Mars, and Macklemore have all won Grammys for their success in performing music that is arguably black music.
