However, if one thinks of the background of such tunes, and how they are mostly minstrel songs, they can seem problematic. Minstrel shows incorporated blackface: when white people would use burnt cork to give themselves the appearance of an African American with exaggerated features.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> While in this getup, they would portray racial stereotypes that are very offensive. This sheet music cover depicts one of the stock characters white men would portray in their minstrel performances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The songs of minstrel shows inspired Stephen Foster into writing more of these popular tunes.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> He is famous for many memorable melodies, including \u201cOh, Susanna!\u201d and \u201cOld Folks at Home\u201d. These songs remained popular well passed the 1920s, and we all know them today. If one watches a scene from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riding High <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Frank Capra, 1950), one can hear the legendary Bing Crosby singing one of Foster\u2019s hits, \u201cCamptown Races\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f2B5XQCLtLQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It sure is catchy! However, if one listens closely and reads the <a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Stephen-foster-de-camptown-races-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">original lyrics<\/a>, one can see where this song becomes problematic. First of all, the actual title is \u201cDe Camptown Races\u201d, and the words are written in a way that portrays the dialect of a stereotypically, ill-educated, African American; for example: the use of \u201cde\u201d and \u201cgwine\u201d. This little ditty was originally written with the intention of white performers painting their faces black and singing the song in order to mock African Americans.<a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\" name=\"sdfootnote1anc\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> Despite the racist nature of this tune, it lives on as an American folk classic, as many of Foster\u2019s songs have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not saying it\u2019s horrible to enjoy this song or others like it. Many people do.
