Racism and Discrimination became the new form of slavery in the united states and has continued to be a pressing issue, even in 2017. The middle of the 20th century brought the beginnings of people standing up against this injustice and speaking out a message of hope for the future. Two of these people were Mahalia Jackson, and Marian Anderson. Both of them, around the same time period, used their musical influence to stand up and peacefully strive for equality. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2211\" style=\"width: 219px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2017\/10\/Marian_Anderson_October-25-1951-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2211\" class=\" wp-image-2211\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2017\/10\/Marian_Anderson_October-25-1951-1-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2211\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marian Anderson<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What these two woman have in common was their use of song to make a statement against political opposition and oppression. In an article from 1939, it discusses Marian Anderson sinning American Folk Songs, as well as Gospel on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.\u00a0Anderson was to have a performance at Constitution Hall in D.C. but the \u201cDaughters of the American Revolution\u201d (DAR) refused to allow her to perform to an integrated audience This performance was a demonstration of her strength and unwillingness to back down. Closing her performance with a performance of the spiritual \u201cNobody knows the trouble I&#8217;ve seen\u201d gave a solid stance of her strength. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/search.proquest.com\/docview\/492549785?accountid=351.\">https:\/\/search.proquest.com\/docview\/492549785?accountid=351.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mahalia Jackson was a gospel singer who also used her voice in\u00a0 a similar way to<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2212\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2017\/10\/Mahalia-Jackson.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2212\" class=\" wp-image-2212\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/593\/2017\/10\/Mahalia-Jackson-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mahalia Jackson<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anderson. While she herself was not considered an opera singer, she was considered to be the \u201cqueen of gospel\u201d and known as&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cthe single most powerful black woman in the united states\u201d -Harry Belafonte <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a quote from Jackson she describes her singing: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I sing God&#8217;s music because it\u00a0makes me feel free&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Jackson once said about her choice of gospel, adding, &#8220;It gives me hope. With the blues, when you finish, you still have the blues.&#8221; The power to which this woman sang was an obvious representation of her pride and hope for peace. In a world where even with all of her fame she was still considered a \u201ccolored\u201d person. To have such strength and an the attitude to fight for what you believe in so strongly is incredibly commendable and admirable.
