This graduate preparatory program provides academic support to low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students, helping them prepare\u00a0for applying to graduate school.<\/p>\n<p>Asian Conversations (ASCON) is a high impact learning community about Asia, along with a sequence of Chinese or Japanese language study for participants\u2019 first two years of college. The program is dedicated to providing students with a comprehensive global perspective with exceptional disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches on Asia (such as art, history, linguistics, literature, political science, and religion) as well as a faculty-led experiential January term to China and Japan during the sophomore year.<\/p>\n<p><em style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Asia in Northfield <\/strong><\/em><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">is an ongoing project. The initial research and production <\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">team includes <\/span><strong>Jacob Caswell <\/strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">(&#8217;17), <strong>Paoge Moua<\/strong> (\u201915), and <strong>Meena Wainwright\u00a0<\/strong>(\u201916), from CURI and Trio\/McNair programs. He received his PhD. in Chinese and M.A. in Arts from the University of Hawaii and another M.A. in Thai Studies from Chulalongkom University, Thailand.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 300; color: #4d4d4f;\">His research interests explore the symbiotic ties and tensions between individual identity and cultural discourse. Although he is a physics and math major, he has always been intrigued by how cultural identity affects individual life experiences in the United States. He also firmly believes that, as a liberal arts college student, he should explore fields beyond his more immediate and strictly defined\u00a0area of study. Her family now resides in Boulder, Colorado. She majors in French and Asian Studies with a China Studies concentration. With a\u00a0keen\u00a0interest in linguistics\u00a0and language\u00a0acquisition, she is also intrigued by\u00a0personal and cultural identity as well as cross-cultural communication. She is\u00a0considering graduate school in the field of humanities upon graduation, although she is leaving her options open at the moment. He majors in Asian Studies with a China Studies concentration. His primary interest is the Asian American experience, specifically the interactions among socioeconomic adjustment, political participation, and mental health.
