Classes at St. Olaf College

Although there is no actuarial sciences major/concentration (yet), there are plenty of courses offered by St. Olaf’s Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, and Management Studies departments that satisfy the VEE Credits required to become an SOA Associate and take the advanced-level exams. These are the required courses to fulfill the three VEE credits:

  • Economics: ECON 261 + ECON 262 (Intermediate Microeconomic Theory and Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory)
  • Corporate Finance: MGMT 281 (Corporate Finance)
  • Applied Statistical Methods: STAT 272 (Statistical Modeling) + ECON 385 (Econometrics)

It is important to take these courses now unless you wish to go back to school and earn them later! Other courses that are strongly recommended to complete are:

  • MATH 262 (Probability Theory): This course covers roughly 85% of the topics on the first exam
  • ECON 121 (Principles of Economics): Prerequisite for Economics courses
  • MGMT 225 (Principles of Accounting): Prerequisite for Management courses
  • MGMT 380 (Investments)
  • STAT 322 (Statistical Theory): Provides more in-depth analysis of topics from Probability Theory
