Tower of Babel being built

Master of the Munich Golden Legend

He was a medieval illuminator. Active between 1420 and 1450 in France. He received his name because of his contributions to the French translation of the Munich Golden Legend.

This artwork contributes to our understanding of both sides (the people’s and God’s) of the conflict. We can see the people working diligently in building this tower to the heavens in an attempt to stay isolated and oppose God. At the top of the tower we can see what looks like angels trying to prevent and stop the people from finishing the tower. This connects to the text by showing how God did not want the people building this tower and also going against his plan of scattering the people across the Earth. In the bottom left corner you can see a bishop warning the builders to stop building in fear of the consequences that God could impose on them. This consequence that the text tells us is God scattering the people and spreading the languages throughout the world.
