SenkoMadeleine250x200Botticelli’s Birth of Venus is world-famous. For Madeleine Senko ’14, it has become an old friend.

While studying abroad in Florence, Italy, this year, Senko landed an internship at one of the world’s most renowned museums: the Uffizi Gallery.

LB-DayInTheLifePoster3Students enrolled in St. Olaf’s Intermediate Photography course had one civic engagement project as their main focus for the semester: Depict the lives of Laura Baker Services Association’s clients in a way that hadn’t been done before through photography.

All of the photographs will be exhibited from 5-7 p.m. on May 9 in an art crawl. The event begins in the Archer House’s Bittersweet Cafe at 5 p.m. with a presentation from Sandi Gerdes, LSBA executive director, and Meg Ojala, St. Olaf art professor at 5:30 p.m.

The group will then be led to Hogan Brothers Cafe for the next set of prints and the art crawl will end at the Hideaway. There will be complimentary food and beverages at each location.

artapprenticeopeningThe artwork of six St. Olaf and Carleton College art interns: Anda Tanaka, Anders Nienstaedt, Arielle Rebek, James Wilson, Justina Ny, Mathew Brutger and Sheila Novak will be featured in the Gallery through May 18.

This is a fascinating view of the intersection of organic life with human determination. You will see ingeniously constructed books installed in wooden sculptures, richly layered photographs, luminous bronze pieces, and mixed media drawings. The artists explore connections; the connection of the human figure to the natural landscape, the relationship between physical and mental health, and the complexities of compassion. As mixed media artist Anders Nienstaedt says, “I am interested in the ways in which people explore truth and make meaning”. This exhibit is a visual feast and an intellectual treat.
